Environment Wildlife & Vegetation Cabo Caletas is uniquely positioned in a migratory corridor for many different species of animals and our intention is to blend our development into the environment without disturbing the natural features of the property. It is very common on any given day to see a flock of Scarlet Macaws, Monkeys, Sloths, Parrots, Frogs, Crabs, Ocelots, Butterflies, many other different types of exotic birds and of course Turtles. When people tour Cabo Caletas, one of the most common and lasting impressions is the amount of mature vegetation and wide variety of trees. We have various species native to Costa Rica such as Pochote, Guanacaste, Roble Sabana, Ceibo, Ghilamate, Guarumo, Gallinazo, Cenizaro trees. Wildlife Refuge Our neighbor, Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Playa Hermosa, is a 109 acre wildlife refuge spanning over 9 kilometers (6 miles) of pristine beaches. Known for it's secluded beaches, volcanic reef and many tidal pools perfect for sun bathing and snorkeling, this is clearly a must do for everyone to experience. Cabo Caletas beach is directly next to this wildlife refuge therefore it is an easy and convenient stroll to be in the heart of Costa Rica's best spots. This refuge is protected by the environmental agency MINAE as it is a migratory destination for the Lora sea turtles to lay their eggs. In fact, this past October, it was reported that over 46,000 turtles were hatched. The season of nesting spreads from June until February, and observation treks can be made/arranged from the middle of July until December. The refuge is divided into two sectors: One called (named) Tulín or Hermosa, that spreads from the Hermosa Beach (less than 5 km from Jacó) up to the river mouth of the river Tulín or Tusubres, with an approximate extension of 7 km and the other one which is next to us, Punta Mala o Punta Judas, which spreads from the same river mouth, up to a series of rocky formations and tidal pools. The geological phenomenon Punta Judas, a volcanic rock formation flowing over a kilometer into the ocean is one of the most impressive sites in all of Costa Rica. The views and experience is great way to spend a day and explore the thousands of tidal pools with various marine life. Cabo Caletas has been and will working with MINAE to preserve and maintain our wildlife refuge natural state for many years to come. |
